In Time Out this week…

“Giving due process its due remains the most effective and just way to tackle crime of all kinds.” - Girish Shahane.

“Kashmir is so visually rich that I never missed watching movies.” - Tassaduq Hussain, cinematographer for Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara.

“The West with nearly a century of stable institutions could afford salon humour.. I cannot even if my fellow cartoonists think they can. The cartoon is an attribute of democracy but mine is a precarious island democracy whose shores are being licked by erratic waters all the while. On this insecure perch do you expect me to laugh or cry?” O.V.Vijayan, quoted in Hemant Morparia’s review of his Tragic Idiom, Cartoons and Notes on India.

  1. That quote by OV Vijayan is so powerful.

  2. Vijayan has been the finest cartoon that India has ever produced. He was condemned to being appreciated by a minority ‘cause he drew for ‘The Statesman’ which was truly a Calcutta newspaper (though there is a Delhi edition), was never prolific in the sense that at his best he drew may be one or two cartoons a week, was very low profile in the sense that one would hardly come across a photograph of him smiling to the camera and he was a minimalist in the sense that there were no beautifully formed lines, shapes or characters in his work. But boy the wit was razor sharp and the message was biting. I grew up with the statesman and Vijayan’s cartoons.

  3. Km, Shoummo, I think Vijayan was phenomenal. A biting message indeed.
