Why Oh Why Dept: Farhan Akhtar’s Don

October 21, 2006

I wonder when Farhan Akhtar will realise that there’s more to life than cool haircuts, Aki Narula clothes and neckties worn under the shirt (oh yeah, what was that about?). And SRK has become one big quivering mass of tics and mannerisms. At one point, when Priyanka Chopra is dabbing at SRK’s wounds with bits of cotton (aargh, I hate those dab-dab moments), she looks up at Arjun Rampal and seems to have a nirvana-moment: Wow, this guy’s sooo much nicer-looking…

Why the Munch painting (yeah, that one) in the saferoom, why the bullock-cart to depict India before Don’s Sonata whizzes by, why the sacrilege of refilming a song that can only ever be Amitabh’s, and why oh why this silly little shadow of a movie at all?

Farhan’s Don is one of the big disappointments of the year. The only good thing is that the people on FM will stop blathering on about Don ko pakadna mushkil nahin, etc. Oh, and we can hope that people (Ramu, J.P.Dutta, koff, koff!) will stop meddling with old hits.

  1. Neckties worn UNDER shirts? *Now* you’ve sold me on this p.o.s. :))

  2. I watched it last night and couldn’t agree more - I was aghast at the ending. Akhtar should really not try these Broken Arrow/Face Off meets Bollywood sort of films!

    Happy Diwali, Uma. :)

  3. I kinda liked the movie. But then that’s the beauty of rock-bottom expectations.

But yes - remakes are a strict no-no-No-way. I think Mr. Akhtar has just used an ages-old brand name to give us this new movie.

And when..grr..when will directors GET the point of an editor ? or hang on..have they done away with editing altogether ?

But why? Are old hits sacred? Can’t we reinvent them? I’m sorry Akhtar’s Don turned out to be bad because I think he’s a talented director. But really, all this frustration about remakes is unwarranted? What’s the worst that could happen? That the remake is a bomb? And the best? We have two great movies to watch!

  5. @Shreeharsh: don’t you think “reinvent” is a rather lofty word in the context of this piece of fluff? If you gotta remake an old hit, at least make it as entertaining, if not as original. Otherwise you end up with Gus Van Sant’s “Psycho”.
