is really an invention of cinema,
and it is now being dreamed by the whole world.I don’t want to discredit this,
but merely ask the question,
“Who is dreaming the European Dream?”
Or better: How are we encouraged to dream it?A concrete, current example just occurred to me:
In the next 2 months or so,
some 20, 30, or even 50 million Europeans
will watch one and the same film.
It started the other day:
every channel up and down,
every programme and news show,
- and I’ve been surfing TV stations throughout Europe -
reported at large on a film premiere in London.
As you have probably guessed already,
all the racket was about James Bond,
that knightly British gentleman,
who has been saving the world from disaster for the last forty years….

Interesting article, but I wonder whether it will end up becoming the same thing as the “American” dream… Anyway, wish you and A, a very happy new year… :-)

What about the Indian dream? I guess only Bangladeshis are dreaming it. For privileged Indians, it is either the American or the European dream.

The culture of Europe is changing. Europe has opened its arms and its doors to the Arab world. The vast majority of the new Arab immigrants to Europe are Muslim. Islam has very definite cultural ideas; these are bound to affect European culture.
It will be interesting to see how this new influence will reshapes the culture of Europe over the next 10 or 15 years.
I think the Islamic ideas are stronger, that is, they are held closer to the heart by Muslims than Europeans hold their own culture. As a result, current day European culture will be affected more by Islamic culture than Islamic culture will be affected by European cultural ideas, or so it seem to me, anyway.
