Thirsty kya?
Salman Rushdie on why coming back to India is still special.“For me its always, you know its like drinking at the well. Every so often you have to come to the well to drink.”
And here’s NDTV’s Barkha Dutt talking to Rushdie. First question: “Is your wife here with you?” *
*Update: (See comment section below) It appears that this is an excerpt from the NDTV interview, and not how it starts. This wasn’t clear from the NDTV website, and I hadn’t seen the TV interview, hence the mix-up. Apologies for the confusion!

>> Barkha: At this moment last year there were a whole lot of tabloids speculating whether there was trouble in Salman Rushdie’s marriage
Interesting, she talks about “a whole lot of tabloids” but herself starts talking about his marriage as the first thing!
And btw, I just managed to buy a copy of The Satanic Verses here.. didn’t manage to get at home because of the ban.. was too young when the book came out, and it got banned before I grew up.. :) let me see how I like it…

That interview is either pure comic genius or a classic example of the pathetic depths plumbed by mainstream Indian journalism.

agree with all the comments . Either Barkha lost an opportunity to get the writer to talk about what he does best - write or NDTV chose to focus on what is most irrelevant about the/an author .

Hello. I have now corrected this a few times on the Net: the link you provide to the rediff interview on rushdie coming back to india is ALSO from the NDTV interview. The bit about his marriage is an excerpt - and not the beginning of his interview, but the end, if you saw it on tv. The website posts different excerpts every day. The link to Kashmir and returning to India was done on the first day. YOu are all welcome to your views of the interview, but it may be nice to be correct on the facts. Many thanks, Barkha.

Hello: the link you provide to the rediff interview is actually from the NDTV interview as well. The bit you refer to on his marriage is merely an excerpt, and the very last bit of the interview, not the beginning. The website excerpts different bits every day, and in fact the returning to India and views on Kashmir was excerpted a day before anything else. It would have been clear had anyone bothered to see the interview when it was broadcast. Anyway, ofcourse you are all free to your critical view of the interview. Just thought you should know the facts.thanks, Barkha Dutt.

Barkha is getting too predictable as days pass by. She talks of inane stuff with a great sense of purpose.

Saw the interview on NDTV here in London, and it was quite interesting.

I found the (TV) interview interesting myself: he came across as articulate and irreverent. And while there wasn’t anything new in what he said, Ms Dutt did touch upon all the general issues: his latest book, his views on the veil, his views on India, and so on. Anything else would have been too literary for popular consumption.
