Jana Gana Mana

September 2, 2007

True to the raga after which he has been named, our son Desh loves music. Whether we’re listening to Pandit Jasraj or Talat Mahmood, our ten month old feels that he must participate in the song with a most soulful “Aaaaaaaaaaa” and some enthusiastic taalam on the bars of his cot.

One of his favourite CDs is Rehman’s Jana Gana Mana and we have heard it several times already. It’s a lovely album, notably the renderings by Rashid Khan, Shobha Gurtu, Saddiq Khan Langa, and the superb Bhimsen Joshi… I love the way the album brings together some of the different voices, instruments, dialects and accents of the country. And hearing D.K. Pattammal’s voice singing along with her granddaughter Nithyashree brought tears to my eyes.

The album also includes Tagore’s original recitation of the anthem. Deeply moving.

  1. haven’t heard the album but saw a clip at a movie theatre - DKP did give me goosebumps - ws telling V how wonderful it was that most artists featured in that were 60+ - somehow just felt right…

  2. Charu: yes, there’s just something about the way DKP sang “Punjaba-Sindhu-Gujarata-Maratha” in her own style…

  6. It is a decent work by Rahman but for a small glitch, till about an year ago it was an INCORRECT RECITATION! “Jaya he” was recited 4 times (twice by Rahman, once by Jasraj, and once by Asha) where as it should have been only three times. Bharatbala’s site still shows 4 time recitation version. Nothing too serious, but in this age of TV, kids should not pick up the incorrect version. For me it was O&M’s work in the mid 80s that gave me goose bumps.

Paattu Ammal was magnificent! I heard her at a live concert once; wonderful voice and an effortless rendition! Mom says DKP is always perfect while others are almost always.
